Afghan refugees: “there is an effort to be made, because among human beings, we are brothers”, launches an administrative authority for the defense of human rights

The National Consultative Commission for Human Rights on Thursday called on the French authorities to “implement efficient policies for the protection and reception of Afghan people”.

“There is an effort to be made, because between humans, we are brothers”, launches Friday October 1 on franceinfo Jean-Marie Burguburu, lawyer and president of the National Consultative Commission of Human Rights. Thursday, the CNCDH formulated several recommendations to the attention of the French public authorities to meet the challenges of welcoming Afghan migrants in exile. The organization also calls on the French state for a rapid diplomatic and humanitarian response.

franceinfo: Do you feel the fear of the French regarding the reception of these Afghan migrants?

Jean-Marie Burguburu: Sure. We must not confuse the right of asylum, that is, the obligation to welcome these people who ask for the right of asylum, and the problems of irregular migrants. The general state of mind of the French is against immigration and the words of certain “pseudo-candidates” for the presidential election are fueling the bad flame in this direction. However, the right of asylum is superior to these fears. It is greater than these risks. It is the honor of France, but also the honor of sensible people. There is an effort to be made, because between humans, we are brothers, and it does not matter the political opinions, the necessities of the moment or the urgency of an electoral campaign.

Why this call?

We are making this appeal because, on August 16, the President of the Republic made fairly strong commitments. Positive commitments, because he strongly wanted the reception of Afghan people in danger to be done as widely as possible in France. A month and a half later, things are not abandoned, but they are outside the limits of the present day. We therefore choose to resume this project.

Are you worried that the promises of humanity will be forgotten?

Not to oblivion, but that they fall into administrative difficulty, in the lack of personnel. Because we are aiming for reception in France, but also the question of how to help Afghans to leave the territory. It depends of course on the Taliban themselves, but it also depends on consular facilities. We ask, for example, that neighboring countries can set up consular facilities for Afghans in their consulates.
