A disturbing incident occurred in the German city of Munich, where an asylum-seeking Afghan individual was arrested for allegedly ramming a car into a crowd, leaving at least 28 people injured. The authorities have stated that it is “probably an attack.” The head of the state government of Bavaria, Markus Söder, informed the press that many elements point towards it being an attack. This incident happened just a few days after the legislative elections in Germany, which were dominated by the issue of migration.

Investigation and Arrest

The suspect, a 24-year-old Afghan asylum seeker, was arrested at the scene. The deputy director of the Local Police, Christian Huber, confirmed the arrest but did not provide further details on whether the act was intentional or not, citing the need for further investigation. The head of the German government, Chancellor Olaf Scholz, condemned the attack as “horrendous” and emphasized that the perpetrator must face punishment and be deported from the country.

Aftermath and Reactions

The incident occurred as a group of people were protesting, convened by the Verdi Services sector union. The union expressed shock and condemned the attack on the protesters. According to initial reports, 28 people were injured, with some in critical condition and fighting for their lives. Among the injured are minors. An AFP journalist at the scene reported seeing the Mini Cooper involved in the incident and a conscious wounded individual being transferred to an ambulance.

Security and Diplomacy

The Interior Minister of the State of Bavaria, Joachim Herrmann, clarified that the alleged attack is unrelated to the Security Munich Conference, a significant diplomatic event scheduled to take place in the city. The conference will host high-profile attendees, including the American vice president and the Ukrainian president. Recently, Bavaria experienced another violent incident involving an Afghan individual with psychiatric issues, who attacked a group of children in a park, resulting in the deaths of a two-year-old boy and a 41-year-old man who intervened.
