India’s women’s soccer team drew goalless against Iran in their opening match of the AFC Asian Cup on Thursday. The Indian team, despite completely dominating the match, missed many scoring chances, letting themselves settle for a goalless draw. Iran looked better in the first minute as they had two chances on goal, including a hit off the crossbar. But the home team regained full control midway through the first half of this Group A match and continued to dominate until the very end.
India showed a great passing game against each other in the second half, which was talked about a lot by head coach Thomas Dennerby. But the team had the misfortune of not being able to win the game by scoring any goals. The Indian team was trying to score goals, but Iran met their relentless attacks. The Indian team was attacking all the way into Iran’s box – crosses, shots, heads – but the home team still couldn’t score. India’s best chance came in the 76th minute when Dangmei Grace headed a header in front of goal, but was somewhat defended by Iranian goalkeeper Zohreh Kodai. The Indian team will now face Chinese Taipei on Sunday.
