Sometimes a name is more than just a label. It’s a memory, a message, a beacon for the future. That’s certainly the case for the first playing field at AF Porto’s brand-new training center. This field, set to open its gates on Saturday, will carry the name of a football star: Diogo Jota. The big news came out this Tuesday from President José Neves himself.
President Neves explained the thinking behind the decision. He said the first field, the one opening first, simply had to have a name. Recent sad events in Portuguese football made the board think hard. They met and decided to honor Diogo Jota by naming the first field after him. This choice aims to keep his story alive and strong for years to come.
But the tribute won’t stop there. Diogo Jota’s brother will also receive an honor, though in a different way. To truly make sure Diogo Jota’s memory is never forgotten, a long wall, stretching 400 meters, will also be part of the center. This wall will feature a special spot for a mural, all about Diogo Jota. The association believes it’s vital to protect his legacy. They want every child who visits the center to look at his name and artwork and feel inspired.
After all, Diogo Jota started his journey early. He first kicked a ball on the association’s fields with a simple heart. He was a simple kid, and he went on to play on the world’s biggest stages with great calm and skill. His story is a perfect reminder that big dreams can start in humble places.
