AEK Tops Greek League After Thrilling Athens Derby, Portuguese Trio Shines

AEK Athens has seized control of the Greek handball championship, propelled by key Portuguese players and coaching staff, following a narrow victory over arch-rivals Olympiacos in a hard-fought derby.

The Athens club secured an intense 28-27 win against Olympiacos, vaulting them to the top of the league standings.

AEK now leads the championship with 16 points, maintaining a perfect record of eight wins from eight matches.

The team’s success in the pivotal match was significantly shaped by Portuguese talent.

Wilson Davyes contributed three goals for AEK, while Gilberto Duarte added two.

AEK is coached by fellow Portuguese national Rui Silva.

On the opposing side, Olympiacos goalkeeper Diogo Valério, also from Portugal, was unable to prevent his team’s defeat despite the close contest.

The match was described as very tough and balanced, reflecting the intense rivalry between the two Athens clubs.

Following AEK’s 16 points, Olympiacos holds second place with 14 points, and PAOK is third with 12 points.
