Actor Vijay’s TVK party accuses Chennai police of abandoning campaign security ahead of 2026 elections

Tamil cinema superstar Vijay’s aggressive push into Dravidian politics hit a flashpoint late Monday. His political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), filed an urgent complaint with the Chief Electoral Officer accusing Chennai police of a complete failure to provide security for a massive campaign rally. The confrontation occurs weeks before the high-stakes April 23 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections, where Vijay is looking to disrupt the traditional dominance of the ruling DMK.

The incident centers on an approved TVK campaign route stretching from Perambur to Kolathur. TVK Joint General Secretary advocate CTR Nirmal Kumar submitted the official complaint on March 30. He stated the route faced “absolutely no police deployment” despite prior authorizations.

An overwhelming crowd response paralyzed the convoy. Campaign vehicles were trapped in the surge. The party described the situation as chaotic and a serious risk to public safety. Vijay recently confirmed his candidacy for the Perambur and Trichy East constituencies.

The security lapse carries heavy political weight following a devastating crowd crush at a TVK rally in Karur in September 2025 that killed 40 people. That tragedy led to the CBI questioning Vijay regarding crowd control failures. TVK officials have now formally accused authorities of “unequal treatment and possible administrative bias,” according to the complaint.

The party is demanding immediate intervention from the Election Commission of India. They claim the DMK government, led by M.K. Stalin, is weaponizing municipal authorities to impose discriminatory restrictions on TVK rallies while allowing the Chief Minister free rein for his open-vehicle roadshows. Just days prior, Vijay accused the Greater Chennai Corporation of digging pits and placing barricades to intentionally obstruct his campaign launch.
