Elon Musk recently did something that all of us have probably done at least once: He bought a new Windows computer, namely a notebook. When he wanted to use the Windows laptop, he discovered that he had to create a Microsoft account. This fact should be known to every Windows user, but Musk apparently didn’t know it.

Musk expressed his displeasure about this on the short message platform X (formerly Twitter) that he bought. Musk wrote there:
I just bought a new PC laptop and I can’t use it unless I set up a Microsoft account, which also means their AI gets access to my computer! That’s a catastrophe.
There used to be an option that didn’t require you to sign in to or create a Microsoft account.
Is that the case for you too?
But Musk wasn’t satisfied with that. Instead, he vented his displeasure in a tweet from Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. You can view this tweet here on Bluesky. Musk wrote:
Satya, I don’t want to be annoying, but please allow users setting up a new Windows PC to skip the Microsoft account creation process.
This option disappears when the computer is connected to WiFi.
And even if you want to sign up, you can’t use a work email address, and I only have work email addresses!
Musk’s criticism of the account requirement for Windows quickly made the rounds on social networks. An X/Twitter user joked: “This will go down in history as the most famous tech support X-post of all time.” Because Musk naturally speaks from the hearts of many Windows users with his criticism. Here are some more funny reactions to Musk’s dispute with Microsoft.
Incidentally, Musk later announced that he had managed to set up his Windows PC without a Microsoft account. A user gave him instructions on how to do this on X/Twitter. You can also find these instructions here:
