Abinader inaugurates cruise terminal in La Romana

The president of the Republic, Luís Abinader, led the inauguration of the new areas of the terminal of the Tourist Port of La Romanabuilt by the company Central Romana with an investment of more than US$15 million, equivalent to RD$825 million.

By leading the act and cutting the ribbon accompanied by the main executives, the president congratulated the company for the model it represents and the investments it makes in favor of the country.

In said terminal, the recreation areas for passengers were doubled, with a swimming pool, themed bars and restaurants, shops and amenities, as well as spaces where visitors can appreciate locally produced crafts, sharing directly with artists and artisans.

The new facilities will increase the number of jobs within the aforementioned tourist port to one hundred and in addition to the improvements in the dock that will allow the berthing of larger shipsas with the arrival of the Odyssey of the Seas cruise from the Royal Caribbean shipping line.

The installation of fenders and moorings to increase the compression capacity was also announced, as well as beams with additional piles to increase the rigidity of resistance to the lateral thrust of the ships.

The terminal
The tourist port of La Romana began its operations in December 2002 and since then it has become a multi-purpose port, where not only ships from “homeport” or mother port are received, but also cruise ships for visitors and excursionists.

In the place passengers can disembark and enjoy the benefits and beauties of this fabulous tourist destination. During the last 20 years, the port received some 2,150 cruise ships with more than five million vacationers and it is estimated that as a result of the commercial and tourist activity of cruise ships in this port terminal, the community of La Romana, the Eastern region and the country have perceived an economic spillover of more than RS$400 million.

The openingThe act took place in the enlarged port terminal, where some of the cruise passengers had the opportunity to take photos and selfies with President Luis Abinader. The director of the Dominican Port Authority (Apordom), Jean Luis Rodríguez; the Minister of Tourism, David Collado and the director of Puerto La Romana, Luís Emilio Rodriguez.

The ribbon cutting was in charge of President Abinader, who was accompanied by the executive vice president of Central Romana, Ramón A. Menéndez, the president of the Executive Committee of Central Romana, Pepe Fanjul Jr, the Minister of Tourism, David Collado, the executive director of Apordom, Jean Luis Rodríguez and the director of the tourist port of La Romana, Luis Emilio Rodríguez.

“For more than 20 years we are benchmarks of leadership within the tourism and cruise industry in the country And with this transcendental investment we are not only increasing the operational capacity of our port of La Romana, but also the necessary conditions to be able to receive the largest cruise ships in the world”, expressed Luis Emilio Rodríguez.

Also participating in the event were Leo Matos García and Eduardo Martínez-Lima Gonzalvo, Vice Presidents of Administration of Central Romana, Ministers José Ignacio Paliza, Joel Santos, Deligne Asunción Burgos and Venancio Alcántara, among other authorities and government figures.

$15 million
The estimated investment in the construction of the new cruise terminal in La Romana is US$15 million, an equivalent of RD$825 million.

20 years
In the last 20 years, the port has received some 2,150 cruise ships with more than five million vacationers. The director of the Tourist Port, Luis Emilio Rodríguez, assured that in more than two decades this terminal has become a benchmark for leadership in the industry.

As a result of the commercial and tourist activity of cruise ships in this terminal, it is estimated that La Romana, the Eastern region and the country have perceived an economic spillover of more than RS$400 million.
