Abinader defines sport as the “country’s hallmark”

President Luis Abinader defined the sports sector as “our country’s hallmark” during his third rendering of accounts before the National Assembly on the occasion, this Monday, of the 179th anniversary of the National Independence of the Dominican Republic.

The ruler highlighted that during the year 2022 a total of 39 sports works were built, including sports centers and other similar facilities throughout the national geography.

Abinader assured that the Government that he heads, through the Ministry of Sports -whose head is the engineer Francisco Camacho- offered during the period January 2022 to February 2023, strong support for high-performance athletes, as well as contributions to the federations for an amount of just over 570 million pesos.

In his speech, he also had words of congratulations for the top basketball team that on Saturday qualified for the World Cup to be held this year in the Philippines.

“I want to congratulate the basketball team that advanced to the World Cup and where we are also going to win,” said Abinader to the applause of those present at the National Congress.

He said that with that sum of money, items have been covered in support of the qualifying events of the Olympic cycle, among which he mentioned the Central American and Caribbean Games, as well as the Santiago de Chile Pan American Games, which will take place this year, as well as the world championships, training camps, blanks and others.

In his speech, Abinader stressed that the aforementioned contribution has the sole objective of guaranteeing a good representation of the country in the international arena.

Abinader also mentioned that high-performance athletes and new values, during the same period, have received support for an amount of 58 million pesos.

“We hope to have a representation that makes us feel proud of our athletes,” said the president.

Among the works inaugurated, President Abinader cited the sports centers of Cristo Rey, Honduras and the Invi neighborhood, of the National District, as well as three others in Santo Domingo Este, such as Pidoca, in Los Mina; Pueblo Nuevo, in Villa Duarte, and that of Housing.

Highlighting the executions in the South region, Abinader highlighted the delivery, this February, of the Pedernales multipurpose facility, the San José de Mendoza sports complex, and the Enriquillo sports center in Barahona.

He indicated that a total of 1,400 sports facilities, including sports centers, baseball and softball stadiums, and fields, have been built and reconditioned for the benefit of children, youth, and the different communities that have been favored.
