A YouTuber Modified a Mac Mini to Reduce Its Size by 78%

O mac mini apple, as its name suggests, is a fairly small computer. However, one YouTuber decided that maybe it really could be smaller.

Quinn Nelson of Snazzy Labs modified a Mac mini and reduced it by 78%. To accomplish this, he eliminated one of the biggest culprits for the Mac mini taking up so much space: the 150W power supply.

After removing it, he replaced it with a Microsoft Surface 65W external power supply and retrofitted it with a MagSafe 2 connector, which connects to a DC voltage regulator that leads to the Mac mini’s logic board.

One of the reasons for the bigger case is to allow better thermals, so obviously a smaller case is less efficient. To resolve this, Nelson 3D printed a resin box and adopted the Mac Pro’s cheese grater design with holes to allow better airflow.

If you’re interested in trying it yourself, Nelson has posted a building guide you can check out.
