A year and a half after Bielsa’s departure, Leeds United were relegated

Three years after promotion achieved under the leadership of Marcelo Bielsa, Leeds United lost their permanence in the Premier League this Sunday and said goodbye to the English top flight after three seasons.

Leeds were thrashed at home by Tottenham -without Cuti Romero- 4-1 but a victory would not have reached them either, as they finished 19th with 31 points, six behind Everton (17th), which was saved thanks to their victory over Bournemouth -Marcos Senesi headline- by 1 to 0.

Bielsa’s former team had just escaped relegation on the last date last season, when he released the Rosario midway through the tournament due to poor results to hire the American Jesse Marsch.

It is worth remembering that Leeds was the club where Bielsa was the longest -from July 2018 to February 2022-, who recently took over the leadership of the Uruguayan National Team.

Leicester and Southampton, also left

The one who could not be saved at the end of the Premier League was Leicester City (18th with 34 points), champion of the same not so long ago (2015/2016) and who will return to the Championship after nine consecutive seasons in the top flight. In any case, he said goodbye with a 2-1 win over West Ham, who for their part fired ex-River Manu Lanzini, who will change teams in the break.

The one who was already relegated is Southampton (20th with 25 points), who left with a show for their fans in the 4-4 draw against Liverpool at home. Game that started 0-2, went on to win 4-2 and ended even. The former Racing midfielder Carlos Alcaraz was the starter, with a great first season in England and who could have his future away from the Championship.

With Julián, Dibu, Enzo and Mac Allister

In other matches of the last date of the Premier League, champion Manchester City lost to Brentford 1-0 with Julián Álvarez as the starter. Furthermore, Dibu Martínez and Emiliano Buendía’s Aston Villa beat Alexis Mac Allister and Facundo Buonanotte’s Brighton 2-1 at home. Brighton (6th with 62 points) will play next season in the Europa League while the Villains (7th with 61) got into the Conference League with just enough, leaving Tottenham out (8th with 60).
