Barça’s victory against Girona can be explained in a very simple way. Despite the fact that they are two teams that compete in the same league, the potential of both is very different. And that Marc Gasol’s team did not have their best afternoon either. Too soft in defense, failing in attack, they left the game on a plate to a Barça that played many minutes with the less usual. Vesely and Da Silva stood out especially, also Abrines, in a very comfortable game for the locals. Until the final minutes. Barça’s relaxation and the greatest success from the visitors tightened the match until 69-66 with which the last minute started. There was no surprise, there was no surprise, but the relaxation almost cost Barça a dislike.
Girona started the game feeling at home. In a crescendo ovation from the Palau, they applauded Aíto, Oriola and Marc Gasol. They announced the coach first, then the one from Tárrega and finally the midfielder from the Gasols, so that, effectively, the entire presentation of the Girona team took place to applause. And also the first minutes. The 0-6 with which the game began was celebrated by a significant number of Girona fans who filled the stands of the Palau.
With Laprovittola inaccurate, Barça lacked points at the start. A triple by Colom made it 4-11 in the middle of the quarter, evidencing the superiority of Girona. It was not an intense start by Barça, who did not run, quickly finding themselves in tow. Colom directed the visitors with more clairvoyance than Satoransky the locals, in what was almost a match between friends. Even over the loudspeaker he was encouraged to welcome the Girona fans.
The visitor’s advantage lasted while Barça’s aim failed him. Two triples at the end of the quarter put the tables in the electronic (17-17). And they didn’t stay that way. With a partial of 14-0 they recovered the initiative. In a moment, almost without effort, the azulgranas showed what they are capable of. They scored very easily, especially Abrines, Da Silva and Vesely shining (35-24). Already before the break, and with nothing decided, Jasikevicius gave many more minutes than usual to men like Paulí, Da Silva or Nnaji. Girona’s defensive facilities, with numerous errors in attack, did not help Aíto’s team (50-38).
Despite the fact that Girona reduced the distance below ten points, the third quarter was a walk for Barça. Relaxed, comfortable, every time they pressed a little they went on the scoreboard. And they did not need too great a performance, but simply take advantage of the mistakes of a Girona that is far from the level of Barça (65-50).
But Girona did not give up. And Barça lowered the defensive level. Also the intensity. Before they knew it, they had gotten into trouble. With three to go, the distance was small (68-63) and with a minute to go it was even less (69-66). Girona never even had possession to draw in a match that did not escape Barça.
