A US law will require new cars to detect if the driver is under the influence of alcohol.

One of the provisions of the recently passed infrastructure bill in the United States could save thousands of lives by preventing drunk driving.

New US law requires all new vehicles to be equipped with sensors capable of detecting if the driver is drunk and preventing the car from starting.

There are several technologies that today allow detecting the state of intoxication, such as the dosage of alcohol in the blood through the driver’s breath or through the skin. There are also sensors that can tell if a person is drunk by looking into their eyes.

The National Road Traffic Safety Administration determine which technology is best and demand it on all new vehicles. Older vehicles will be exempt, so the change will not come overnight.

“We can eliminate drunk driving and save thousands of lives with the technology available today. Our bipartisan infrastructure bill will change the way we ensure road safety. “ Senator Hickenlooper said.
