A strange sanction from the UCI to Landa finally has no effect

Mikel Landa finished the Tirreno-Adriatico in seventh position, 56 seconds behind the winner Primoz Roglic. Before starting the seventh and final stage this Sunday, the UCI notified a series of sanctions after some events that happened on the sixth day, on Saturday. On the way to the outcome in Osimo, on a demanding climb, several runners avoided a section with cobblestones for a few meters, going in this case along a sidewalk that was at the same level as the main terrain and that was slightly differentiated by some pivots. Among them was Mikel Landa, and the UCI decision penalized these riders with 20 seconds, 500 Swiss francs and 50 UCI points.

Together with the player from Alavés, the others theoretically sanctioned they were Van Aert, Zimmermann, Teunissen, Hugh Carthy and Vermeersch. One of the most affected was Landa, because in such a tight general classification, the 20-second penalty for the one from Bahrain they made him fall to tenth place in the standings. Finally, and although it was not officially communicated on any channel, the organization pointed out on the radio of the teams that the UCI was backing down and annulling this sanction, as indicated cyclingnews. The man from Vitoria and Hugh Carthy maintained their seventh and eighth places respectively in the general classification.
