Howard gives you and Howard takes you. In that sense, he may be a bit reminiscent of last year’s Baldwin. It is obvious that it is not a game driver but, when it starts to put, it does not stop. Sometimes he can be called an individualist, but the truth is that thanks to his three-pointer at the horn there was extra time and Cazoo was able to sign their second victory in the Euroleague this season. Then, in extra time, he was better than the Serbian team. The 1.78m shooting guard finished with 33 points in just 23:49 on the court, with 8/12 from three.
In the first quarter there was some equality although the Belgrade team took the initiative a little more (11-20, min. 9). Mathias Lessort did a lot of damage and the Vitorians suffered with the talent of Obradovic’s team, which barely rotated. Giedraitis responded with triples and Howard, until then cold and coming off the bench, threw two and hit one. When Lessort went to rest, it was LeDay who took over from him in the paint. The Serbs managed four 2+1s in the first ten minutes. Nunnally and Exum also played at a high level.
In the second period, Peñarroya’s men let their hair down with a 32-19 run. At the halfway point of the duel, they had 10/20 triples with a Howard who had already uncovered the jar of essences. They made 11 points in the first three minutes of that installment. Peñarroya surprised with his bet as youngsters by simultaneously keeping Kurucs, Thomas and Howard on the court. People like Marinkovic and Sedekerskis contributed a lot, either in defense and rebound the first or in points the Lithuanian. In the 15th minute the score already indicated a tie at 30.
Baskonia started better in the third quarter (53-46) but Punter got his team into the game again (67-67, min. 29). In fact, that quarter was won by Partizan 21-26. The New Yorker put on his boots well escorted by Lessort and LeDay. Obradovic masterfully moved his bench and the Serbian team pointed to victory. But Baskonia was able to improve their defense, close their rebound and look for good shooting options. And that started the last quarter with only 2 points in four minutes. That streak was broken by Marinkovic with a great penetration falling to the ground. They were his first two points. When everything seemed resolved in favor of the Slavs, a spectacular triple came from Markus Howard, already by then very inspired, which caused the extension. Nunnally missed a second free throw and sparked that play.
Those from Belgrade started with a partial 0-5 but Baskonia responded with another 7-0. Howard again, but this time helped by Hommes, Giedraitis and Costello, began to cement the final victory in extra time. And that there were quite a few players loaded with fouls in the local team. Obradovic’s men failed what they had not failed in the regulation period and Darius Thompson, from the free kick, signed the Serbian demise. The last robbery and the final basket were anecdotal. Too much income to explain what was seen at the end because the match was much tighter during the 45 minutes that it lasted. In real time, almost two and a half hours on the clock. People began to go home around eleven o’clock at night.
The truth is that the Basque team has already been in the Euroleague for two days and has beaten its rivals in both. They beat Valencia Basket at the Fuente de San Luis and today gave a good account of Obradovic’s team. He has overcome Enoch’s injury and the controversy with the departure of Luca Vildoza from the NBA and his arrival at the Red Star. Next week, precisely, he will have to play against the Serbian team but, along the way, there is a complaint filed in the Euroleague to mediate in the conflict. Those of the Buesa Arena claim to have the European rights of the Argentine after his departure from the United States. So there is still an outside player to join and this will not be Luca.
