A six-year-old girl dies crushed by an elevator in a hospital in Mexico

A 6-year-old girl died this Tuesday in a public hospital of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) in the southeastern state of Quintana Roo, after being pinned in an elevator while being transferred on a stretcher to the hospitalization area.

The little girl was admitted to the General Hospital of Zone number 18 of Playa del Carmen of the IMSS, when the They were transferred on a stretcher that did not fully enter the elevator, so when the button to go up was activated, the minor was pressed.

In a video broadcast on Twitter, you can see how hospital staff try to rescue her without success, which ultimately led to the death of the little girl.

In a statement published hours after the events, the IMSS lamented and expressed its condolences to the relatives of the little girl and reported that the minor was receiving adequate care for her condition, without giving further details about it.

He also said that the institution “provides and guarantees comprehensive support to the family from the beginning.”

According to the bulletin, the IMSS assured that the required and adequate medical attention was provided during the contingency, but “unfortunately the patient died.”

The IMSS pointed out that the management staff of the medical unit “immediately” notified the competent authorities, “with whom it collaborates in the investigation, providing all the necessary facilities for the corresponding actions, in order to guarantee transparency in this unfortunate made”.

Finally, he argued that the elevator maintenance service is subrogated to an external company.

In a video published on social networks, the IMSS delegate in Quintana Roo, Enrique Leobardo Ureña Bogarín, pointed out that the company Soluciones Integrales de Transportación Vertical in Mexico, in charge, since February, of maintaining the elevators of the aforementioned hospital reviewed, hours before the accident, the elevator that ended the life of the minor, but did not notify or indicate its restriction of use.

“Prior to the accident, the failure of the elevator was reported. The company in charge of maintenance was informed, then the technician appeared for the pertinent diagnosis and finally it can be seen in the videos that the technicians leave without leaving signs or barriers that prevented the use of the elevator”, pointed out the delegate.

According to information from local media, the minor entered the clinic on Monday night to receive treatment for dengue.

For its part, the Quintana Roo State Attorney General’s Office announced that it opened an investigation folder after the death of the girl and indicated that a man is in custody, while the causes of the events that caused the death of the girl are determined.
