A plane carrying 23 US Marines crashes in northern Australia

A plane carrying the US military has crashed in the Tivi Islands, an archipelago north of Australia No fatalities have been reported so far..

CareFlight and Australia’s Northern Territory Police have confirmed they are both responding to the incident on remote Melville Island, 60 kilometers off the coast of the city of Darwin, ABC News reported.

The Northern Territory Government fire incident map shows emergency services were notified of the plane crash at 9:43am local time.

“Initial reports suggest so The incident affects US defense personnel and that members of the Australian Armed Forces were not involved,” said a spokesman for the Australian Department of Defense.

“At this critical initial stage, our focus is on responding to the incident and ensuring the safety of those involved,” he said, adding that “further information will be provided as needed.”

More of 2,500 soldiers from the US, Australia, the Philippines, East Timor and Indonesia are currently participating in the exercise on the Tivi Islands.
