A nine-euro monthly package for unlimited transport in Germany

The German government is intensifying its efforts to encourage the population to favor less polluting public transport. For example, it recently announced the introduction of a monthly pass allowing unlimited use of regional trains and buses, metros and trams in major German cities. Travelers will have to pay 9 euros for this, indicates Le Figaro.

Tens of thousands of reservations

The bundle offer will be available from June 1 and will last for three months. It is possible to register from this Monday. Major German public transport players immediately saw an impact in ticket bookings for the relevant period. 130,000 seats in regional trains in the Berlin region (Germany) and 50,000 Deutsche Bahn train tickets were purchased in one day.

The cost of the device has been estimated at 2.5 billion euros. The objective of the measure is to give a boost to the purchasing power of Germans, limit the use of cars and pollution linked to transport and reduce dependence on oil from Russia. The Federal Environment Agency has indicated that a regional train emits 2.3 times less CO2 than a private vehicle.

Double-edged popularity

The success of this monthly subscription could increase the cost. Passenger associations have also deplored the influx of new passengers in trains that are sometimes already overloaded.
