A young 25-year-old dancer died in the US after eating cookies and going into anaphylactic shock due to the peanuts they contained.
Órla Baxendale developed an allergy to this ingredient and from then on had to be extremely careful every time she consumed food.
So this young British woman decided to eat these cookies without fearing that it would cost her her life on January 11th.
The young woman managed to get an emergency injection of adrenaline, but her body could not withstand the strong allergic reaction.
Her family's lawyer explained that Órla “was very careful and extremely vigilant about everything she ate, always carefully checking the ingredients in all containers.”
A labeling error led to his death
The Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection ordered a recall of Florentine cookies more than a week after the death.
According to the documents, the cookies' labels did not indicate that they were made from peanuts.
An image of the product shows that the label was printed by supermarket chain Stew Leonard's itself. But Stew Leonard Jr., the company's CEO, accused cookie maker Cookies United of making a mistake in reporting the ingredient list.
“Unfortunately, we purchased these cookies from a company that never informed us of the change in ingredients.” “We sold them in good faith and a customer was affected,” he said in a statement.
The manufacturer denied the claim and said it informed the supermarket about the peanut ingredient in the recipe in July 2023.
Authorities are investigating the incident to find out who is responsible.
