Yes, Siddharth Basu, who came up with the idea for the show in an interview, said that StarPlus VP of Programming Sameer Nair suggested the name Amitabh Bachchan to introduce KBC. When Amitabh Bachchan was offered to host the show, he initially turned it down. After much persuasion, he made a condition and then agreed to host the show.
Said Siddharth Basu, Amitabh Bachchan went to London to see the taping of the original version of the show Who Wants to Be Millionaire. When he saw it, he put a condition in front of us and said that he would agree to only one condition and that is that we will also have to follow the same rules and discipline as in the original version. Neither he nor the show ever looked back. Siddharth Basu further said that initially Big B used to feel uncomfortable having personal conversations with the contestants, but gradually he opened up about the matter and began to enjoy it.
