Jharkhand High Court summons DGP over missing girl DNA delay

A systemic crisis in local law enforcement has forced immediate judicial intervention in Jharkhand. The state High Court summoned Director General of Police Tadasha Mishra and top Bokaro officials to appear in person today. They face intense scrutiny over the botched investigation into an 18-year-old girl missing since July 2025.

The crisis escalated on April 11. A newly formed Special Investigation Team recovered a female skeleton in a local jungle. Officers claimed the remains belonged to the missing teenager. They did not verify this claim. According to a detailed report by Hindustan Times, police failed to collect DNA samples from the remains or the victim’s parents.

This forensic failure outraged the judiciary. The division bench of Justices Sujit Narayan Prasad and Sanjay Prasad demanded immediate answers. The DGP, Bokaro Superintendent of Police, and the Forensic Science Laboratory director are scheduled to testify today.

The case exposes severe investigative delays. The victim’s mother, Rekha Devi, filed the initial FIR at the Pindrajora police station nine months ago. Local officers produced no results. The situation worsened during an earlier hearing on April 8. The court learned police allegedly summoned and assaulted the petitioner’s relative, Sampat Mahto. He required hospitalization.

Accountability is shifting rapidly. Over 18 police personnel from the Pindrajora station are now suspended. One suspect, Dinesh Mahto, was arrested. However, the petitioner’s counsel doubts the recovered skeleton is the missing girl, citing the suspicious timing of the discovery just days after the court’s April 8 reprimand.

As the Times of India recently outlined, the threat of transferring the probe to the Central Bureau of Investigation looms over the state. High Court justices are establishing a hardline precedent against these delays. They are demanding same-day scientific accountability from senior leadership. This jurisdiction shift effectively strips local officers of the ability to stall critical evidence gathering.
