Luke Gulbranson launches 2026 Congress bid in Minnesota 8th District

Amidst growing domestic friction over heavy foreign war spending and aggressive immigration enforcement, former Bravo reality television star Luke Gulbranson announced a Democratic run for Minnesota’s 8th Congressional District on Wednesday. The 42-year-old Eveleth native launched his campaign to target the seat currently held by incumbent Republican Representative Pete Stauber.

Gulbranson released a formal campaign video on YouTube to outline his core platform. He focused heavily on lowering costs, expanding access to affordable healthcare, and protecting essential social programs. He leaned directly into his Iron Range roots.

His family history includes his great-grandfather working at the Oliver Mine. His father was a union member in Operating Engineers Local 49. Gulbranson used this blue-collar background to juxtapose his television past with his current pivot to politics.

Washington politics represents “real drama with real consequences,” Gulbranson stated, according to a report by Fox 9. He argued this climate is currently driven by “dangerous rhetoric.”

His messaging explicitly attacks the current deployment of ICE forces. He claimed these operations are “wreaking havoc” on local communities. He also criticized the volume of national spending directed toward foreign conflicts, as noted in recent coverage by the Washington Examiner.

How the Boundary Waters Mining Dispute Shapes the 8th District Race

Gulbranson must first navigate a crowded Democratic summer primary. The field currently features at least four other candidates, including Dr. Wendell Smith. The victor will advance to face Stauber.

Stauber has represented the district since 2019. The staunch Donald Trump ally is actively advancing a massive environmental policy shift, according to details verified by KARE 11. He is pushing to end long-standing protections for the Boundary Waters Canoe Area watershed. This legislative effort is designed to open the region for large-scale copper-nickel mining operations. The looming general election will heavily hinge on this localized economic and environmental clash.
