Puducherry Election Live: CM Rangasamy Votes by Motorbike as 2026 Turnout Reaches 17.41%

Voting for the 30-member Puducherry legislative assembly is underway. The union territory is navigating a high-stakes political transition driven by intense economic pressure and long-standing demands for full statehood. Balloting began across 1,099 polling stations at 7:00 a.m. local time on Thursday.

Early participation is steady. The overall voter turnout hit 17.41% by 9:00 a.m. Karaikal district recorded a slightly higher mark at 17.63% across its five constituencies.

Chief Minister N. Rangasamy arrived at the Dhilaspet Government Middle School in the Indira Nagar constituency to cast his ballot. He drove himself to the polling station on a motorcycle. This continues his long-established tradition of riding a two-wheeler among his constituents. Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan and his family also voted early Thursday morning.

Election officials are monitoring 9.50 lakh eligible voters as several Assembly elections open voting across the country. The Election Commission deployed specialized infrastructure for this cycle. The territory features 30 pink polling stations managed entirely by female staff. Specialized booths are equipped with wheelchairs and Braille ballots for persons with disabilities.

Enforcement teams remain active. A flying squad intercepted a distribution network near a polling booth in the Bahour assembly constituency. Authorities seized unauthorized gift tokens valued at ₹1,500 each, according to a detailed report tracking the ongoing electoral violations.

Local initiatives surfaced at a Keezhur polling station in Mangalam. Election staff served voters traditional local foods. The menu included sundal, kozhukattai, and millet porridge.

What the Entry of Vijay’s TVK Means for the NDA Coalition

The 2026 Puducherry election is a volatile three-way battle. The ruling National Democratic Alliance—a coalition of the AINRC, BJP, AIADMK, and LJK—needs 16 seats to retain its majority. They face a unified opposition INDIA bloc led by Congress and the DMK. The political calculus shifted completely with the entry of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).

The actor-turned-politician Vijay launched TVK as a formidable third force. The party is contesting 28 seats. This fractures the traditional voting blocs.

The core policy arguments driving voter turnout center on structural economic changes. The opposition is heavily weaponizing the proposed privatization of Puducherry’s electricity department against the ruling NDA. The fight for the Thattanchavady constituency embodies this friction. Incumbent Chief Minister Rangasamy is locked in a direct electoral battle against his predecessor, Congress MP V. Vaithilingam.

Puducherry historically produces massive voter participation. The territory recorded an 82.2% overall turnout during the 2021 Assembly elections. Final numbers for the 2026 cycle will not be confirmed until polls close Thursday evening.
