Olivia Rodrigo’s new album ‘you seem pretty sad’ drops in June

Grammy-winning artist Olivia Rodrigo officially announced her highly anticipated third studio album on Thursday. The 13-track record, titled you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, is scheduled for a summer release on June 12, 2026, via Geffen Records.

The announcement immediately shatters the four-letter naming convention of her massive first two eras. Rodrigo confirmed the news directly to fans, revealing an upside-down album cover and leaning heavily into what she describes as her most experimental music yet.

The rollout became official after a grassroots teaser campaign across two continents. Fans unlocked a cryptic hotline message instructing them to wait for “true clarity and renewal just after the pink moon” — a lunar event that physically occurred on April 2. At the same time, pink murals featuring padlocks with Rodrigo’s initials appeared on streets in Los Angeles and London. The murals physically unveiled the album’s long title.

Visuals for the new era feature Rodrigo laughing while leaning backward on an upside-down swing. She wears a pink tea dress set against a pale blue sky. Fans can currently pre-order CDs, cassettes, and multiple exclusive vinyl variants. The vinyl lineup includes a “sticky sweet” hot pink edition, a “static lover” pop-up blue edition, and a signed 180-gram black variant, according to a detailed report released on Thursday.

Taking to her newly scrubbed Instagram profile, Rodrigo addressed her followers.

“my third album ‘you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love’ is out June 12th. I am so proud of this record and I can’t wait for you to hear it,” she wrote.

Rodrigo reunited with longtime creative partner and producer Dan Nigro for the project. Thematically, the album is anchored in “London vibes” inspired by time spent in the UK with actor Louis Partridge. Rodrigo told British Vogue the record leans into “sad love songs.” She is actively exploring how romantic tracks carry an undercurrent of fear or yearning. One specific confirmed track directly references the relationship between Sex and the City characters Miranda Hobbes and Steve Brady.

She recently released a special 5-year anniversary cover of “Drivers License” featuring David Byrne. She also contributed a cover of the Magnetic Fields’ “The Book of Love” to the War Child UK charity compilation.

Why the End of the ‘Guts’ Era Changes Rodrigo’s Sonic Future

This announcement is a definitive structural departure for Rodrigo. Moving away from the pop-rock teen angst of Sour (2021) and Guts (2023), she is shifting to a lowercase, full-sentence aesthetic. She is now delving into the darker insecurities and complexities of being in a “great relationship.”

The transition arrives immediately after she closed the Guts World Tour. That massive global run concluded as the highest-grossing tour by an artist born in the 21st century, pulling in nearly $185 million. The industry reaction to her next step was immediate. Fellow artists like Suki Waterhouse, Gracie Abrams, and Addison Rae publicly flooded the announcement’s comments to show their support.

Her sonic influences are also expanding. British Vogue confirmed that The Cure’s Robert Smith was physically in the studio with Rodrigo during the creative process for this record. That collaboration points directly toward the “experimental” shift she promised her fans.
