DeSantis signs bill to rename Palm Beach airport after Trump: The $5.5M travel shift

If you are booking a flight to South Florida this summer, your baggage tags are about to change. State lawmakers just utilized preemption powers to strip local control from Palm Beach County and completely rebrand its primary transit hub amid deep political polarization. Governor Ron DeSantis signed legislation on Monday officially renaming Palm Beach International Airport to President Donald J. Trump International Airport.

The change officially takes effect on July 1. Pending a swift approval from the Federal Aviation Administration, the familiar PBI airport code will vanish. It will be replaced by DJT on all government maps and aviation databases. This is a massive logistical shift for the region.

The financial toll of this rebranding is steep. Florida taxpayers are on the hook for an estimated $5.5 million to cover a global signage replacement program and extensive system updates according to a detailed report published on Monday. Democrats in the state strongly opposed the measure. They argued the state government completely ignored the voices of local residents who actually live and work near the facility. The bill easily passed through the Florida House and Senate along strict party lines.

State Representative Meg Weinberger sponsored the legislation. She recently attended the unveiling of President Donald J. Trump Boulevard. That new road connects the airport directly to Mar-a-Lago. Now the airport itself shares the name.

Private entities tied to the Trump Organization filed trademark applications for the new airport names right before the bill passed. They also trademarked branded suitcases and shuttle buses. The organization clarified they will not charge Palm Beach County royalties for the airport name itself and plan to provide a licensing agreement at no cost. This kind of sudden infrastructure change has a real impact on the lifestyle of frequent flyers navigating South Florida.

Final clearance rests with the FAA in Washington. Bryan Bedford currently heads the federal agency as a Trump appointee. Aviation insiders expect the approval process to be a rapid formality. Start updating your travel apps. The DJT era begins this July.
