Chevron Wheatstone plant crippled by Cyclone Narelle: Weeks of delays hit global LNG

The Middle East energy collapse just found a second front. With the ongoing U.S.-Iran war neutralizing Qatar’s massive LNG facilities and choking off the Strait of Hormuz, global markets desperately relied on Australia to keep Asia powered. Extreme weather just fractured that lifeline.

Tropical Cyclone Narelle slammed into Western Australia. The storm inflicted severe equipment damage on Chevron Corp.’s Wheatstone onshore gas plant. The facility near Onslow is now struggling to restart. Chevron confirmed repairs will keep the plant from reaching full production rates for a “number of weeks.”

Supply Chains Snapped

This is a massive hit to global supply. Wheatstone produces 8.9 million tons of liquefied natural gas annually. The sudden disruption sidelines critical capacity just as Asian buyers face an unprecedented supply crunch.

Details emerged over the weekend. A recent update issued Sunday outlined the widespread cyclone damage paralyzing the region. The broader industry is scrambling to assess the total volume of stranded gas.

Mixed Recovery Efforts

Chevron saw some success nearby. The company’s larger Gorgon facility, which handles 15.6 million tons a year, managed to return its three LNG production trains to full rates by Sunday. Other operators are not as lucky.

Woodside Energy’s North West Shelf project remains hampered. Teams are only just beginning workforce remobilization and safety inspections. Combined, these storm-hit hubs temporarily knocked out more than 38 million tons of annual production capacity.

The Price Shock

Asian LNG spot prices spiked over 90 percent last month. That was before Narelle hit. The Wheatstone delay threatens to push those numbers even higher.

The economic fallout is hitting Australian citizens directly. States are taking emergency action. Victoria is rolling out free public transport to help residents cope with soaring domestic fuel costs driven by the international squeeze.
