First Harry Potter HBO trailer reveals new trio as Warner Bros ignites UK streaming war

Warner Bros. Discovery’s aggressive UK streaming expansion launched today with the ultimate trump card. The first official teaser trailer for the decade-long Harry Potter television reboot is finally here.

The footage dropped on March 25, just one day after a cryptic promotional image sent the global fandom into overdrive. It offers a highly anticipated first look at 11-year-old actor Dominic McLaughlin taking on the mantle of the Boy Who Lived. The timing of the release is entirely strategic. HBO Max officially launched in the UK this week. Corporate executives needed a massive subscriber draw to compete in a saturated territory. They pulled the trigger on their most lucrative property.

The trailer opens on the bleak reality of Privet Drive. McLaughlin sits in the infamous cupboard under the stairs. Then, a massive tonal shift hits. Nick Frost appears on screen as Rubeus Hagrid. We finally see the new central trio standing together. Alastair Stout steps in as Ron Weasley. Arabella Stanton takes on the iconic role of Hermione Granger. The studio sifted through more than 30,000 global auditions to find these new leads.

The adult casting is already sparking fierce debate online. John Lithgow steps into the heavy robes of Albus Dumbledore. Janet McTeer takes over as Minerva McGonagall. Paapa Essiedu rounds out the heavy hitters as Severus Snape.

Warner Bros is making a massive bet on this entertainment juggernaut. Showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod are steering the massive production. Both are veterans of the hit drama Succession. They promise a strictly faithful adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s original seven novels, dedicating one full season to each book.

Filming actually began in secret back in July 2025 at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden. The series is currently locked for a premiere window between December 25, 2026, and early 2027.
