According to unconfirmed reports from Reuters, Manchester United are in advanced talks to sign Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes for a fee of approximately €80 million. The development coincides with emerging interest in Guimaraes’ midfield partner, Sandro Tonali, creating uncertainty surrounding the core of Newcastle’s roster.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reported that both Manchester City and Manchester United have made official inquiries regarding the Italian international’s availability. Arsenal and Juventus are also monitoring Tonali, though a transfer to the Italian club is currently considered highly complex due to financial constraints.
The pursuit of Guimaraes is reportedly driven by departing Manchester United midfielder Casemiro, who recommended his Brazilian compatriot as a replacement amid an ongoing squad overhaul by INEOS. Local Newcastle reporters have contested the advanced nature of the negotiations, indicating that a finalized deal is not imminent and noting that Real Madrid maintains a renewed interest in the player.
Tonali’s agent, Beppe Riso, addressed the speculation publicly, stating his camp will “evaluate in March whether Newcastle are open to anything,” while confirming Tonali remains attached to the club. No official transfers have been completed, and both players remain under contract at Newcastle United.
Newcastle United must navigate the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules. The club’s financial structure, backed by the Saudi Public Investment Fund, requires periodic player sales to fund ongoing squad investments. Guimaraes and Tonali represent two of the club’s highest-valued assets.
Tonali, who arrived for £55 million from AC Milan in July 2023, returned to active play in August 2024 following a 10-month global football ban for betting violations. The duo previously anchored the Newcastle midfield that secured the EFL Cup in 2025.
