Sony Restores PlayStation Network After Global PS4 And PS5 Outage

Sony Group Corp. resolved a widespread PlayStation Network outage on Saturday that temporarily blocked PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 users globally from accessing online games and services.

The disruption, which coincided with the launch weekend of the high-profile title “Crimson Desert,” peaked at more than 14,000 user reports before services were gradually brought back online late Saturday.

Sony officially confirmed the service failure at 4:59 p.m., stating that the outage affected multiple core infrastructures. The impacted systems included Gaming and Social, Game Help, Game Streaming, Tournaments, and Trophies.

According to outage tracking platform Downdetector, user complaints surged past 14,000 during the initial failure.

The figure subsequently declined to approximately 6,000 as connectivity returned.

The downtime disrupted access to major multiplayer titles, notably the “Call of Duty” franchise and various Electronic Arts releases. Players attempting to access online titles on PS5 encountered server authentication errors throughout the afternoon.

By 22:40, Sony announced that systems were recovering. The official PlayStation Service Status portal currently lists the network as fully resolved, stating: “All services are up and running.”

Impending Network Rebranding

The weekend disruption occurred as Sony prepares for a major transition in its digital infrastructure. According to leaked internal communications reported by IGN and The Mirror, the company plans to permanently retire the legacy “PlayStation Network” and “PSN” branding by September 2026 in favor of a unified digital ecosystem.

While Saturday’s outage was resolved within hours, it prompted immediate user concern reflecting past service failures. The PlayStation ecosystem previously experienced a 24-hour downtime incident in February 2025 and a historic weeks-long security breach in 2011.
