The actor passed away in his sleep of natural causes, according to an official statement provided by his family to The Hollywood Reporter on Friday afternoon. His death marks the loss of a foundational figure in late-90s television, where his portrayal of the quick-witted, non-magical anchor of the “Scooby Gang” helped pioneer the geek-chic archetype that dominated early internet pop culture.
In their statement, Brendon’s family addressed his highly publicized past, noting that he was “on medications and treatment to manage his diagnosis and he was optimistic about the future at the time of his passing.” The family also shared that Brendon had recently found immense peace and passion in painting and creating art.

Brendon starred in all seven seasons of the supernatural drama from 1997 to 2003. Beyond his breakout role, he maintained a steady presence on network television, securing a 21-episode recurring role as FBI technical analyst Kevin Lynch on the CBS procedural Criminal Minds. He also starred alongside Bradley Cooper in the short-lived Fox sitcom Kitchen Confidential and earned critical praise for his performance in the 2013 low-budget sci-fi cult thriller Coherence.
His later life and career were heavily impacted by severe physical ailments. Brendon suffered from cauda equina syndrome, a debilitating spinal nerve compression condition that caused intense pain, limited mobility, and temporary paralysis, ultimately requiring multiple invasive back surgeries.
