Israeli airstrikes flattened a residential building in central Beirut early Wednesday morning, killing at least six people as the military expands its ground invasion against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. The Lebanese Health Ministry and Reuters confirmed the dawn strikes targeted the Bachoura and Zuqaq al-Blat neighborhoods.
The bombardment of the capital coincides with intense, localized ground combat across at least three strategic sectors near the Israeli border. The Israeli Defense Forces have amassed four brigades to push into Lebanese territory, facing heavily armed resistance from Hezbollah fighters utilizing anti-tank guided munitions, artillery, and drone swarms.
The current escalation began on March 2, 2026, when Hezbollah launched a rocket barrage into Israel in retaliation for a coordinated U.S.-Israeli strike that killed Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. That exchange shattered a ceasefire established in November 2024. The regional fallout has widened significantly, recently resulting in Iraq oil tankers attacked as Iran outlines peace terms amid war, while the localized ground offensive has displaced over one million people in Lebanon.
The fiercest ground fighting is currently concentrated around the strategic hilltop city of Khiam. The plateau overlooks the Hula Valley, and its capture would allow the Israeli military to sever Hezbollah’s supply lines connecting the central and eastern sectors south of the Litani River to the Bekaa Valley.
Israeli military activity, including heavy air and artillery campaigns to soften dug-in positions around Khiam and Aita al-Chaab, indicates a strategy to occupy the territory south of the Litani River to create a physical buffer zone. Military officials plan to establish a surveillance-dominated sector further north.
Hezbollah is simultaneously facing unprecedented internal political blowback from its traditional support base. The Lebanese government, including the Amal Movement, recently voted to ban the group’s military activities. Furthermore, the Lebanese Information Ministry issued official orders directing state media to cease referring to Hezbollah as “the resistance.”
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that residents of southern Lebanon will not be permitted to return to their homes south of the Litani River until northern Israel is secured, signaling a prolonged military occupation.
