US Deploys Marines As Mojtaba Khamenei Named Supreme Leader

Six U.S. service members died in a military plane crash in Iraq as the Pentagon deploys over 2,000 additional Marines to the Middle East. The military buildup coincides with Iran’s Assembly of Experts naming Mojtaba Khamenei as the country’s new Supreme Leader following the death of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in recent U.S. and Israeli strikes.

The regional conflict, currently entering its third week, intensified as Israel launched a broad-scale wave of airstrikes targeting Tehran and eastern Lebanon. U.S. military forces concurrently intercepted and destroyed 16 Iranian mine-laying vessels near the Strait of Hormuz to maintain control of the critical waterway, an operation taking place as the UK readies drones for allied maritime defense.

U.S. Central Command reported that the six American casualties occurred aboard a KC-135 refueling plane. While the crash remains under investigation, military officials stated it was not caused by hostile or friendly fire. To bolster the U.S. posture in the region, three warships, including the USS Tripoli, are en route.

In Tehran, the succession of Mojtaba Khamenei occurs amid significant domestic and geopolitical turmoil. U.S. President Donald Trump publicly mocked the transition, questioning whether the new leader is alive following unconfirmed reports that he was severely wounded in earlier bombings. Iran’s Foreign Minister formally denied the claims regarding Mojtaba Khamenei’s health.

Trump issued further threats, warning the new Supreme Leader that his tenure would not last without U.S. approval. The U.S. President also threatened additional strikes on Iran’s Kharg Island, stating that previous bombing campaigns had already obliterated military targets in the area.

The escalating warfare has displaced an estimated 3.2 million Iranians from urban centers and triggered a massive spike in global oil prices. In response to the allied campaigns, Iranian forces have launched retaliatory missile strikes against Israel and various Gulf targets.
