The Michigan Wolverines have officially secured the No. 1 seed in the Midwest Region for the 2026 NCAA Tournament following a 31-3 overall campaign. Head coach Dusty May will lead the squad into their opening-round matchup on Thursday, March 19, 2026, at the KeyBank Center in Buffalo, New York, against the winner of the First Four contest between UMBC and Howard.
Michigan enters the national bracket carrying a 19-1 Big Ten conference record. The Wolverines recently recorded an 80-72 loss to No. 2 seed Purdue in the Big Ten Tournament championship game. Despite the conference title game defeat, the selection committee awarded Michigan its fourth No. 1 seed in program history, joining the 1985, 1993, and 2021 rosters.
As Duke and Arizona also finalize their regional placements, Michigan relies heavily on its frontcourt production. Forward Yaxel Lendeborg currently averages 14.2 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. He is joined in the post by 7-foot-3 center Aday Mara. Both players are projected as first-round selections in the 2026 NBA Draft.

Michigan is seeking its first national championship since 1989. During that title run, Glen Rice scored 184 points, a metric that remains the NCAA Tournament record for the most points recorded by a single player in one tournament. The Wolverines maintain an active streak of six consecutive Sweet 16 appearances in their last six tournament bids, with their most recent National Championship game appearances resulting in runner-up finishes in 2013 and 2018.
