The 68-team field for the 2026 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament is officially set. Duke, Arizona, Michigan, and the reigning national champion Florida Gators secured the four No. 1 overall seeds following the selection committee’s bracket reveal on Sunday.
Miami (Ohio) secured a tournament berth as one of the “Last Four In.” The RedHawks posted an undefeated regular season before falling to UMass in their opening game of the MAC Tournament, dropping their record to 31-1.
The selection committee assigned Miami (Ohio) to a First Four play-in game against SMU in Dayton. NC State and Texas claimed the other two spots in the “Last Four In” category. Oklahoma, Auburn, San Diego State, and Indiana failed to make the cut, officially designated as the “First Four Out.” The upcoming sports schedule begins with the First Four matchups before transitioning to the standard 64-team bracket.
The debate surrounding bubble teams occurred against the backdrop of a frozen tournament structure. In August 2025, NCAA President Charlie Baker and NCAA senior vice president of basketball Dan Gavitt mandated the 2026 tournament would remain at 68 teams, maintaining the format established in 2011.
Baker confirmed that the NCAA, alongside broadcast partners CBS and Warner Bros., is sustaining discussions regarding a future field expansion to 72 or 76 teams. This proposed expansion targets high-performing programs from deep major conferences that currently face exclusion on the tournament bubble.
