Del Toro Wins 2026 Tirreno-Adriatico Making Mexican History

Mexican cyclist Isaac del Toro of UAE Team Emirates-XRG captured the 61st edition of the Tirreno-Adriatico on Sunday, finishing with an overall time of 28:02:14 to become the first rider from Mexico to win the Italian stage race. The 22-year-old secured the general classification title by a 40-second margin over American Matteo Jorgenson of Visma-Lease a Bike, surviving a late puncture in the final two kilometers of the concluding stage in San Benedetto del Tronto.

The traditional 142-kilometer closing sprint stage ended in dramatic fashion for the race leader. Del Toro struck a pothole with just two kilometers remaining, suffering a front-wheel puncture. He managed to keep his bike upright and safely crossed the finish line alongside his teammates to officially seal the victory. Up ahead in the bunch sprint, Italian rider Jonathan Milan of Lidl-Trek powered to the Stage 7 win for the third consecutive year.

Jorgenson snatched second place overall by securing three bonus seconds during an intermediate sprint on the final day. That late push allowed the American to narrowly overtake Italian Giulio Pellizzari of Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe, who finished third overall, 42 seconds behind the leader. Del Toro’s victory caps a dominant week where he also swept the race’s points and youth classifications.

Speaking after the race, Del Toro revealed he achieved the overall win despite battling an illness in the days leading up to the competition and the preceding Strade Bianche. His performance on the road demonstrated consistent strength, highlighted by a commanding stage victory on the mountain ramps of Camerino and matching aggressive attacks on the gravel sectors earlier in the week.

This result marks his 26th professional win and adds to a highly successful early 2026 campaign that includes a general classification victory at the UAE Tour.
