South Africa Routs New Zealand By 7 Wickets In First T20

South Africa defeated New Zealand by seven wickets in the first Twenty20 International at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui, chasing down a target of 92 with 20 balls to spare. A newly shaped Proteas bowling attack dismantled the hosts, bowling New Zealand out for 91 in just 14.3 overs to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

The collapse marked New Zealand’s 10th-lowest total in T20 international history and their second-lowest against South Africa. Fielding a heavily rotated squad resting eight players from their recent World Cup finals run, the hosts stumbled to 36-5 during the powerplay and never recovered against a South African side featuring four debutants.

As fans of international sports watched, fast bowlers Gerald Coetzee and Ottneil Baartman initiated the early damage. Coetzee claimed 2-14 and Baartman took 2-22, removing the New Zealand top order including Devon Conway and Tom Latham. Nineteen-year-old debutant paceman Nqobani Mokoena earned Player of the Match honors by cleaning up the tail, finishing with figures of 3-26 in 3.3 overs. Jimmy Neesham provided the only sustained resistance for New Zealand, top-scoring with a modest 26 runs.

In response, South Africa chased the low total methodically, finishing at 93-3 in 16.4 overs. Debutant Connor Esterhuizen anchored the innings with an unbeaten 45 off 48 balls, sealing the victory with a six. Fellow debutant Dian Forrester supported Esterhuizen at the crease, finishing 16 not out. Another debutant, Rubin Hermann, contributed in the field with a direct-hit run-out.

South African captain Keshav Maharaj praised his young bowling unit’s top-notch execution. New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner, who bowled tightly with figures of 1-8, noted that the pitch provided more early movement than the team had anticipated. The series now moves to Hamilton for the second game.
