The Melbourne Storm defeated the St George Illawarra Dragons 46-20 at WIN Stadium in Wollongong to secure a Round 2 victory. The loss drops the Dragons to an 0-2 record for the 2026 NRL season following a late defensive collapse where they surrendered five unanswered tries in the final 18 minutes.
Compounding the defeat, the Dragons lost both starting playmakers to lower leg injuries. Halfback Daniel Atkinson and five-eighth Kyle Flanagan sustained significant ankle damage during separate tackles and will undergo immediate medical scans. The dual injuries present a severe challenge in the demanding sports landscape as the team seeks its first victory of the campaign.
Speaking to reporters post-match, Dragons coach Shane Flanagan confirmed the severity of the situation. “Both have got bad ankles. They will probably both have to have scans,” Flanagan stated. “I watched both tackles, they weren’t hip drops but weight landed on the lower legs and they got swung around… It’s a bit of a concern.”
Both halves received heavy strapping at halftime and elected to play through the pain to maintain a recognized playmaker on the field. Prior to the late collapse, the Dragons held a 20-18 lead in the 62nd minute. Atkinson had registered two try assists and 443 kick meters before the St George Illawarra defensive line faltered.
Melbourne fullback Sua Fa’alogo capitalized on the deteriorating defense, scoring a 12-minute hat-trick to seal the 46-20 result. The Dragons finished the match with 44 missed tackles, 12 yardage errors, and four penalties conceded.
The 0-2 start follows a narrow Round 1 defeat in Las Vegas, where the Dragons lost to the Bulldogs via a late Stephen Crichton field goal. If scans sideline Flanagan and Atkinson, the club will rely on untested junior talents Kade Reed or Lyhkan King-Togia for their scheduled Round 3 away match against the Parramatta Eels at CommBank Stadium.
