North Korea Fires 10 Ballistic Missiles During Allied Drills

On Saturday, North Korea fired an estimated 10 ballistic missiles into the sea off its east coast. The launches occurred at approximately 1:20 p.m. local time as the United States and South Korea conduct their annual joint military exercises.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff reported the short-range projectiles were fired from the Sunan area near Pyongyang’s international airport and flew approximately 350 kilometers before landing in the water. Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi confirmed the missiles fell safely outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone, reporting no damage to aircraft or maritime vessels in the area.

The barrage is a direct response to the 11-day “Freedom Shield” exercises currently being held by Washington and Seoul. Pyongyang routinely condemns the computer-simulated and field training drills as rehearsals for an invasion.

The timing of the launches coincides with intense global geopolitical strain. With the United States currently engaged in a rapidly escalating conflict with Iran in the Middle East, regional security concerns have heightened in Seoul. Speculation among local intelligence analysts suggests the U.S. may be considering a relocation of vital missile defense assets, such as Patriot PAC-3 interceptors, from the peninsula to the Middle East. Against this backdrop, the South Korean president faces a complex diplomatic environment regarding regional defense strategies.

Prior to the launches, Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, issued a statement condemning the allied exercises. She warned that continuing the drills at a time when the global security structure is “collapsing rapidly” would bring “terrible consequences.”

Despite previous overtures from Washington expressing a willingness to meet with North Korean officials, Pyongyang has maintained demands that denuclearization prerequisites be abandoned before any diplomatic engagement resumes.
