Hawthorn secured a 62-point victory over Essendon on Friday night, defeating the Bombers 21.19 (145) to 13.5 (83) in the 2026 AFL Round 1 season opener at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
The heavy defeat in front of a 70,000-strong crowd extended Essendon’s losing streak to 14 consecutive games. Following the match, Essendon coach Brad Scott admitted there is a significant gap between his squad and the league’s elite teams.
“It’s not as if [Hawthorn] did anything to surprise; we just failed to stop it,” Scott said during his post-match press conference on Friday night.
Scott also addressed the AFL’s push for margin compression. He indicated that new officiating adjustments for the 2026 season, specifically the last touch out of bounds and a stricter interpretation of the stand rule, will make it more difficult for inexperienced teams to contain top-tier opponents, potentially widening the competitive gap.
The match underscored the demanding nature of professional sports, as Essendon initially maintained competitiveness for the first 45 minutes of the contest. The momentum permanently shifted in the second quarter when Hawthorn, a 2025 preliminary finalist, executed a six-goal scoring burst. Hawthorn’s transition game was anchored by veteran Jack Gunston, who finished the match with five goals.
Despite the loss and the continuation of a losing streak dating back to an injury-plagued 2025 season, Essendon reported no new injuries. The Bombers also fielded three debutants: Hussien El Achkar, Max Kondogiannis, and Dyson Sharp. Sharp contributed two goals during his first professional appearance.
