An armed man died Thursday, March 12, 2026, after intentionally ramming his vehicle through the front doors of Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Michigan. The attack on the largest Reform synagogue in the United States injured one security guard and prompted the emergency evacuation of 140 preschool children.
Federal authorities are investigating the incident as a targeted act of violence against the Jewish community. The attack occurred against a backdrop of rising domestic antisemitism and heightened geopolitical tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.
The vehicle breached the building’s main entrance and traveled down an interior hallway before the suspect was engaged by armed synagogue security. The lead security guard was struck by the intruding vehicle and knocked unconscious. The guard was hospitalized and is expected to survive.
During the confrontation after ramming the vehicle into the building, the suspect’s car caught fire. The suspect was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene.
None of the 140 preschool children present in the building were injured during the evacuation. Zero congregants or teaching staff reported injuries. Thirty responding law enforcement officers were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation resulting from the vehicle fire.

Michigan authorities stated that the vehicle-ramming approach heavily mirrors low-tech terror tactics frequently circulated in ISIS propaganda. The attack follows a wider pattern of incidents targeting houses of worship in Michigan, which included a fatal shooting at a Wayne County church last year.
The FBI’s Detroit field office led active-shooter training at Temple Israel in January 2026, just two months prior to the attack. Officials credited this specific training for the flawless evacuation process and the immediate security response.
As of 2:51 AM local time on Friday, March 13, authorities are working to officially identify the badly burned body of the suspect and are actively clearing the vehicle of suspected explosives.
