An armed man was fatally shot by security personnel on March 12 after ramming a vehicle through the doors of a Michigan synagogue. Officials confirmed the attacker was killed and a security guard was injured during the incident at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield Township.
The attack occurred amid heightened security alerts at Jewish institutions nationwide following recent international military actions. Authorities confirmed that all congregants and staff, including children at an on-site early childhood center, were safely evacuated without injury.

The assailant, armed with a rifle, drove a vehicle down a hallway of the synagogue before the car caught fire. Armed security personnel on site engaged the individual, resulting in the attacker’s death.
Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard stated the injured security guard was struck by the vehicle and knocked unconscious but is expected to survive.
As the FBI investigates the incident, Director Kash Patel confirmed that federal agents and state bomb squads are actively working the scene. The identity of the attacker and the motive remain unknown.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer condemned the violence, stating that antisemitism has no place in the state.
The incident follows a period of heightened vigilance for synagogues globally, which have ramped up security protocols since February 28 following U.S. and Israeli military strikes against Iran.
