Apple will not introduce under-display Face ID with the iPhone 18 Pro Max. According to unconfirmed reports from Gulf News updated at 10:20 AM local time on March 12, the company is pushing its display overhaul to 2027 due to persistent manufacturing hurdles.
The Dynamic Island cutout will remain on the 2026 flagship devices. Apple will reuse the manufacturing molds from the current iPhone 17 Pro series, halting a highly anticipated physical redesign.
Technical Roadblocks and Display Yields
The delay stems from technical limitations within the supply chain. Analyst Ross Young and tipster Digital Chat Station indicate that the under-display infrared technology faces ongoing yield issues. The primary roadblocks involve maintaining OLED screen transparency without sacrificing facial recognition accuracy.
Without the under-display transition, the iPhone 18 Pro Max will feature the identical front aesthetic as its predecessor. The device will measure exactly 8.8mm thick.
Internal Spec Bumps and Timeline Shifts
While the exterior remains physically familiar, the internal specifications include a battery capacity exceeding 5,000mAh. The iPhone 18 Pro Max will run on the A20 Pro chipset, manufactured on a highly efficient 2-nanometer process.
Apple is also altering its historical fall release calendar to manage a crowded hardware lineup. The premium iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max, and an unannounced folding device will launch in Fall 2026. The standard iPhone 18 and a budget variant are delayed until Spring 2027. This staggered approach comes as Apple aims to maintain its market position across multiple financial quarters.
