Carlos Barroca, a prominent figure with a decade of association with the NBA, will run for president of the Portuguese Basketball Federation (FPB), setting the stage for a high-profile leadership contest.
The former national basketball personality officially announced his candidacy for the elections expected in May 2026. He had been considering the move for some time.
His entry into the race positions him against at least two other potential candidates. João Carvalho, the FPB’s current General Secretary, and Sandra Reynolds, president of the Madeira Basketball Association (AB Madeira), are also reportedly preparing to run.
The upcoming election will select a new leader as current FPB President Manuel Fernandes concludes his third and final term. Fernandes is constitutionally barred from seeking re-election.
