Real Madrid Stumbles, Xabi Alonso Confident of Reversal After Losing LaLiga Lead

Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso reaffirmed his team’s focus on their upcoming match against Athletic Bilbao, despite a recent poor run that has cost them the top spot in La Liga and prompted discussions with club president Florentino Pérez.

Alonso stated his commitment to preparing the team for the next challenge. He emphasized that there is still a significant portion of the season remaining and that results can change quickly.

“I’m thinking about tomorrow, about preparing the team,” Alonso said. “There’s still a long way to go, more than a third of the season. Everything is tight, there’s a lot to decide. Things can change a lot.”

The coach also confirmed recent positive discussions with president Florentino Pérez. He indicated the conversations revolved around a shared desire to reverse the team’s current trajectory.

“Yes, I spoke with him again and the conversations are being very positive, in a good atmosphere, with a desire to reverse the results, and that’s what we discussed,” Alonso added.

Real Madrid enters the Bilbao match following a challenging period. The team has secured only one victory in its last five games, a 4-3 win against Olympiacos.

This poor form includes three consecutive league draws. They drew 1-1 with Girona, 2-2 with Eibar, and played to a goalless 0-0 draw against Rayo Vallecano.

The string of disappointing results caused Real Madrid to lose their La Liga leadership to Barcelona. They now require a favorable outcome from the Atlético Madrid versus Barcelona match in Catalonia to potentially reclaim the top position.
