Professional footballer Philippe Lanquetin has been sentenced to three years in prison, with one year of effective imprisonment, for a severe drunk-driving accident in France that left another motorist quadriplegic, a conviction that reportedly led to the termination of his loan spell with Dutch club ADO Den Haag.
The central defender, currently affiliated with Portuguese club Estoril, caused the collision in October 2023. At the time, Lanquetin was 18 years old and playing for Lens’s Under-19 team.
He crashed his vehicle into another car on a French highway after leaving a party.
The driver of the other vehicle sustained severe neurological damage and became quadriplegic. The impact occurred at an estimated speed of 140 kilometers per hour (approximately 87 miles per hour).
Lanquetin was driving without a valid license and tested positive for a high alcohol level and cannabis consumption. He was accompanied by a friend during the incident.
Estoril signed Lanquetin in 2023, the year of the accident, for their Under-23 squad. This past summer, he was loaned to ADO Den Haag in the Netherlands.
Dutch media reported that the Dutch club ended the loan agreement, citing that they were unaware of the criminal case against the player.
