Netflix Axes Essential Mobile Casting Feature for Most Users

Netflix has quietly removed a key feature allowing users to cast content from its mobile app to most smart TVs and streaming devices, citing an effort to “improve the customer experience.”

The streaming giant confirmed the removal on a support page. It stated that users would now need to operate the service using the remote control that came with their television or streaming device.

Many subscribers previously relied on the “Cast” function within the mobile application for convenience, particularly for navigation. The button to initiate video transmission to Google Chromecast or compatible Smart TVs has disappeared from the Netflix app in recent weeks.

This change affects all subscribers, regardless of their plan. Previously, Netflix had restricted Cast access only to subscribers with ad-supported plans earlier this year.

Customer support informed a user complaining on Reddit that casting is no longer possible “if the device has its own remote.” This indicates a shift towards encouraging direct interaction with the TV interface.

However, Netflix will maintain the Cast functionality for users of older Chromecast devices and Google Cast compatible TVs. This exception applies only if they subscribe to an ad-free plan.
