Portugal has seen a significant increase in road accidents this year, even as the number of fatalities on its roads has decreased, according to new provisional data.
The country recorded 131,803 road accidents by November 27, 2025. This represents a 5.5% rise compared to the same period in the previous year, with 7,123 more incidents reported.
Despite the surge in total accidents, fatalities on Portuguese roads fell by 10.8%, with 388 deaths registered. This marks 47 fewer deaths than in 2024.
However, serious injuries climbed to 2,538, an increase of 33 victims compared to the same period last year. Minor injuries saw a reduction, dropping by 730 to a total of 40,069.
These statistics were provided by the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR).
Geographically, the Lisbon district registered the highest number of accidents, with 22,568 occurrences. It was followed by Porto with 21,752 accidents and Aveiro with 10,081.
Lisbon also led in the number of road deaths, recording 44 fatalities. Porto followed closely with 41 victims, and Setúbal reported 32 deaths.
