Chaves capitalized on a severe disciplinary collapse from their opponent Torreense, securing a 2-0 away victory after the home side was reduced to nine players by halftime in a Portuguese Second Division match.
Torreense saw captain Stopira receive a direct red card just 15 minutes into the game. Fellow midfielder André Simões followed, also dismissed with a direct red in the eighth minute of first-half stoppage time.
The double expulsions left Torreense playing with a significant numerical disadvantage for the majority of the match. Chaves took advantage, with goals from Reinaldo and Roberto sealing the win.
Reinaldo scored the opening goal from a penalty kick in the 45+2 minute. Roberto added the second with a header in the 88th minute.
This victory provisionally moved Chaves into fourth place in the league standings with 20 points. Torreense, also on 20 points, dropped to fifth after the 12th matchday.
The referee, António Nobre, first sent off defender Stopira after he handled the ball following a shot by Chaves’ Milovanovic in the penalty area. This led to Chaves’ first penalty attempt.
Torreense goalkeeper Lucas Paes initially saved Milovanovic’s ensuing penalty kick, keeping the score level despite his captain’s dismissal.
However, Paes was unable to stop Chaves’ second penalty of the half. Reinaldo converted after David Bruno fouled a Chaves winger inside the box.
André Simões’ red card came shortly after, issued for a hard tackle on an opponent just before the break.
Despite being down to 10 men, Torreense had a goal disallowed for offside in the 27th minute, when Guilherme Liberato’s shot was nullified due to Danny Jean’s position. Goalkeeper Paes also made further saves to deny Milovanovic and Wellington.
The winning goal by Roberto, his fifth of the season, came from a cross delivered by Kiko late in the second half.
The match was played at Estádio Manuel Marques in Torres Vedras, Portugal. Attendance was recorded at 1,483 spectators.
