Ukraine Strikes Russian Oil Tankers in Black Sea, Targets War Revenue

Ukraine has significantly escalated its attacks on Russian oil infrastructure in the Black Sea, directly targeting vessels and port facilities to undermine Moscow’s war funding.

Ukrainian maritime drones recently struck two oil tankers identified as part of Russia’s “shadow fleet.” The assaults demonstrate a heightened threat to Russian energy exports in the strategic waterway.

The vessels, named “Kairos” and “Virat,” are both flagged in Gambia and are subject to international sanctions. They were hit in separate incidents.

The “Kairos” was attacked in the southwest Black Sea, off the Turkish coast. The “Virat” was struck in the central-east area on a subsequent day.

Video footage verified by the BBC captured a drone impact on one ship, resulting in a large explosion and plumes of black smoke. Ukrainian security sources confirmed the use of “Sea Baby” drones, developed by the SBU, in these operations.

Turkish authorities provided assistance to the attacked vessels. They reportedly battled fires aboard the “Kairos” following its strike.

These strikes signal a clear intensification of Ukraine’s strategy. The goal is to disrupt Russia’s oil revenue, a critical financial artery for its military operations.

The attacks send a stark warning that Russian oil shipments in the Black Sea are now vulnerable to direct military action. This expands the pressure beyond existing Western economic sanctions.

The escalation follows a separate incident where a major consortium, responsible for transporting oil from the Caspian region, temporarily suspended loadings at Russia’s Novorossiysk port in the Black Sea. This suspension occurred after a different drone attack inflicted significant damage on its loading facilities.
