SRK on Andre Russell’s IPL Retirement: “Any Other Jersey Would Look Strange”

West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell has announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL). This decision concludes his long tenure as an integral part of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) franchise. Russell will not be leaving the team entirely, however, and is set to take on a new role.

He will join KKR’s coaching staff as a Power Coach for the IPL 2026 season. His announcement comes as a surprise to many, made just before the player auction for 2026.

Kolkata Knight Riders co-owner Shah Rukh Khan responded to Russell’s career change. Khan expressed deep gratitude for Russell’s significant contributions to the team over the years.

Khan posted on social media, thanking Russell for “wonderful memories.” He affectionately called Russell “Our Knight in shining armour!!!” Khan’s message highlighted Russell’s impact on KKR.

Khan’s message continued, emphasizing Russell’s new role. He affirmed that Russell’s “role will remain strong, giving knowledge and strength to our Purple and Gold Boys.”

Adding a personal touch, Khan stated, “any other jersey would look strange on you, my friend.” He concluded with, “Muscle Russell for life! Love you from the entire team and all who love the game.”

Russell also shared his sentiments on X, confirming his retirement from the IPL. He reflected on his “fantastic” 12-year journey and the “lot of love” he received from the KKR family.

He reassured fans that he would still “hit sixes and take wickets” in other global leagues. Russell expressed excitement for this new KKR chapter. He concluded, “New chapter, but same energy, always a part of the Knight.”
